The one-time leader was sentenced of planning a military coup in last fall and handed more than 27 years in incarceration, but he remained under home detention pending appeals.

High Court Judge Alexandre de Moraes said the move to detain the septuagenarian politician was a precautionary step after recent developments were revealed.

But a week later, on the eighth of January, thousands of his backers attacked and damaged public facilities in the national capital, Brazil's capital.
